Our favorite Chinese company Xiaomi is moving into mass production of its first Xiaomi SU7 electric car, and that for the domestic market. We already have the first glimpses from the production hall.

The reveal is on 28. March, live stream

Xiaomi SU7: This is how electric car production works

Lei Jun, co-founder of the brand and the head figure of this project, showed us in the video how the production process works. The videos appeared on the Twitter / X social network and capture several steps involved in assembling and testing the car.

The first video will serve as an illustration of the HyperFactory production hall—a massive Xiaomi plant in China dedicated exclusively to manufacturing and/or assembling different configurations of the Xiaomi SU7. In this factory, there are four key departments that are part of a total of six workshops:

  • Research & Development Department
  • Production
  • For sale
  • Customer Support

A robot paradise in a massive Chinese factory

The production hall is truly huge. As you can see in the video, Lei Jun has to use a small vehicle to tour the entire hall. But let’s get to the focus of the workshop—the welding section. It is currently 91% automated and includes up to 400 robots responsible for welding every single element of the Xiaomi SU7.

To give you an idea of the level of automation in this production hall, the welding section alone has more than 400 high-resolution cameras. The robots can even do their job with the lights off—or in complete darkness.

Lei Jun claims that other factories, such as Mercedes-Benz, taught him to place the engineering office in the center of the production workshop. That’s especially because it keeps it right at the heart of the action, so he can monitor all the important manufacturing processes.

Xiaomi HyperCasting: A high-level technological process

SU7 is an electric car with a specific manufacturing process. It uses a pressure casting technology called HyperCasting. This technology enables producing the car body in an innovative and efficient way.

This type of technology was introduced for the first time by the American company Tesla for its Tesla Model Y. Xiaomi, however, improves it and raises the bar even further. The manufacturer increased the size, quality, and even the strength of the cast parts, which is beneficial for the resulting durability of the electric car.

At the core of this technology is a pressure die-casting space that covers an area of 840 square meters. It is surrounded by a pressure casting machine with more than 60 parts components. During the casting, clamping, and temperature regulation process, there is up to 9100 tons of clamping force, which firmly locks the mold into which the aluminum alloy in liquid form is poured—heated up to 700 °C.

Up to 8 layers of paint

Another area Lei Jun showed us is the painting section. The design of the Xiaomi SU7 receives up to 8 layers of paint, and the entire process is, of course, optimized with robotic arms. The result is a glossy finish that feels premium even in the base version.

The finale comes in the form of shock absorber testing. They undergo several tests right within the same production facility, thoroughly checking every unit of each already assembled vehicle. You’ll definitely appreciate these tests as a potential future user, especially considering the quality of road surfaces in Slovakia. Right?
