If right now Xiaomi SU7 is one of the main rivals of the Porsche Taycan, the future SUV 4×4 from Xiaomi by the end of the year 2024 could stand up to the Porsche Cayenne.
Xiaomi SU7 mixed things up
Since Xiaomi unveiled its new sporty EV Xiaomi SU7 and set out to become a full-fledged electric car manufacturer, at least 2 leading global EV makers have been suffering from a headache. They are Tesla, which is making its electric cars more expensive, and Porsche, which has an enticing design for Xiaomi.
Will Xiaomi compete with the automaker Porsche with another model as well?
A serious rival to the premium Porsche Taycan has hit the market—and that’s the Xiaomi SU7. The Xiaomi sedan clearly signals that one of its main competitors is Porsche Taycan. It seems this German automaker is facing competition from its next model. Xiaomi should, according to everything, launch a new electric SUV on the market at the end of 2024. This model should have a look similar to Porsche Cayenne.
An electric Xiaomi SUV 4×4 is already on the horizon
Car body and equipment make SUVs bulky and heavier. Moving them requires more accumulated energy, which means bigger batteries, and therefore even more weight. Producing electric SUVs is demanding. Despite that, it seems these problems won’t stop Xiaomi, because the latest reports from China suggest that it plans to launch the 4×4 SUV by the end of the year.
Even though we assumed that the development and approval process for electric vehicles is a long-term affair and that the Xiaomi SU7 model wouldn’t show up in Europe for at least 3 years, it looks like Xiaomi has already kicked off the production lines for its electric cars and plans to keep going without stopping (even if for now not for the EU market). Information about Xiaomi’s second electric vehicle has already leaked into the public, suggesting that another model is already on the way.
What will the Xiaomi SUV look like?
Based on the available information, Xiaomi plans to bring to market a large SUV with luxury tweaks that could be a direct competitor to the Porsche Cayenne. This model would not only compete on the international stage—the battle would also be on the domestic market against the Li Auto L9, which seems like a price-accessible rival for Xiaomi.
It’s expected that part of Xiaomi’s plans is to introduce a vehicle with similarly generous interior space as the 7-seater Li Auto L9 model.
According to leaked information, Xiaomi’s SUV might not have to be only electric. In China, it’s quite common to use a combination of a battery and a diesel combustion engine. Therefore, it’s likely that the Xiaomi SUV will be a plug-in hybrid. We’ll see how the situation develops.
