In the promo photos, every aquarium looks perfect—and that’s why we looked at what Mijia Smart Fish Tank 2 Pro looks like for people who actually bought it. Xiaomi sold it to thousands of customers in China, and hundreds of them took photos of how they set it up at home, with fish, with plants, and even completely empty.
We went through their reviews on mi.com and on Youpin, picked the nicest shots, and wrote down what owners like after a few weeks and what drives them crazy. We also broke down the technical specs and every function in the first article about this aquarium.
We arranged delivery to Europe—you’ve got a coupon!
The Mijia Smart Fish Tank 2 Pro is sold with delivery across all of Europe by our partner Gshopper. The price includes VAT and shipping, so when it arrives you don’t pay anything extra. The aquarium weighs about 11 kg, so it’s shipped by truck, which usually takes up to 30 days. If you have a claim, you handle it with the seller—not with Xiaomi in China.
💡 Version info: The aquarium is sold only in the Chinese version, and in the Mi Home app you pair it only after switching the region to Mainland China. It powers via a 220 V adapter, and the seller will send you the plug type—you choose it when placing the order.

This is what it looks like in real homes
What surprised us most is how different aquariums can be from the same tank. Someone poured in orange sand and someone else simply arranged five plants in pots. Another person built a snowy mountain out of stones or submerged a root that, in the evening under the spot light, looks like it’s on stage. On the photos you’ll find tetras and goldfish, and in one photo, a cat guards the aquarium from a shelf.
The photos come from reviews on mi.com from September and October, and many of these aquariums have only been running for a few weeks since they were set up. At this stage, the plants are only starting to grow roots, so the growth will get thicker over time.
What owners like about it
On mi.com, Fish Tank 2 Pro has 5,442 ratings and 99.6% satisfied, but that number is inflated by automatic ratings that the system fills in for people without a written review. There are 5,083 of those, so only 359 people who gave the stars themselves expressed a real opinion. Of those, 326 gave a full five, 13 gave four to two, and 20 gave one star. On Youpin the ratio is similar: out of 861 ratings, 818 are automatic, and six people gave it one star.
In reviews, the quiet operation is mentioned most often. One customer described the pump noise as “almost not audible,” and another says you can easily keep the aquarium even at a desk in the bedroom. Right after that, people praise the super-white glass, which doesn’t have a green tint, and the new spot light, which according to them makes the aquarium look its best in the evening. They only complain that it can’t be rotated.
Owners of the first generation appreciate that the second one is slightly bigger and has a separate dry and wet filtration section, so dirt gets captured earlier before it’s dispersed back into the water. The feeder has an opening on top, so it won’t get wet, and the pump can be disassembled and cleaned.
One customer praised, after plugging it in, that the flow finally is enough. Another had previously had a 60-centimeter aquarium with plants, but he got tired of trimming, fighting algae, and dosing CO₂. According to him, the Xiaomi aquarium is more than enough for slightly advanced keepers. However, if you want a dense plant growth of all colors, then it won’t be enough for you, because—he says—just the light for that kind of growth costs more than this entire aquarium.
What they complain about after the first few weeks
Nearly all one-star reviews revolve around quality control. For some people, the lid didn’t sit flush, and for another, there was an aquarium with a gap between the glass and the bottom frame, where a danio fish got stuck. Others found scratches on both the glass and the display, unevenly applied silicone, or a filtration unit with scratches and a strand of hair inside.
After the first ten days, the lid with the electronics stopped working, the aquarium turned off, the next one had a disconnected tube in the pump straight out of the box, and he first thought it was broken. Some Xiaomi replaced the aquarium, but a claim in China means sending the whole aquarium back, and that’s not something you easily do at home with fish.
The second group of complaints concerns temperature. For one owner, the display showed around 30 °C after three days, even though the room was 24 °C, and the replaced unit still reported over 27 °C at 22 °C in the room. For another, on warm September days the water under the closed lid overheated, and someone else complains about the fogged-up glass. Feeder also shows up often in reviews—so hard to take out of the lid that one customer damaged it in the process—and less often the back panel, which turned green with algae after a month.
Be careful when heating. One customer who bought his aquarium from Xiaomi—already his fourth, and according to his own words also his last—described how a 100-watt heater from another brand started smoking and burned out in it. Xiaomi then requested the tank for inspection. Xiaomi’s current version 2 Pro doesn’t have its own heater yet, so if you need one, go for a proven model with a thermostat.
Some complaints also concern the Mi Home app. One owner says that after a firmware update he lost the pump timer, and another writes that the button to turn off the pump on the aquarium sometimes doesn’t respond, even though it works fine through the app. Two customers had the pump fail itself. One couldn’t get it working already on the day it was delivered, and the other started cracking after four days.
The last wave of bad reviews was triggered by the price in China. Anyone who supported the aquarium on crowdfunding saw it a few weeks later with a coupon for 10 yuan (about 1 €) cheaper, and Xiaomi also refunded 20 yuan (about 3 €) for a review with a photo. The difference is small, but it angered supporters so much that they gave it one star.
Actual dimensions, according to the owner
The aquarium’s external dimensions are 505 × 292 × 334 mm and it has a capacity of 31 liters. One customer measured it from the inside and wrote down real numbers instead of the catalog specs: 49 cm in length, 22 cm in width after subtracting the rear filtration, and 27 cm in glass height, with a glass thickness of 5 mm. In the box you’ll find the tank, a drain hose, an adapter, a manual, and a card with breeding tips in Chinese. Sand, plants, or decorations from the photos in the package are not included.
Among Chinese reviewers, there are quite a lot of people who have a second or third aquarium from Xiaomi at home. According to most of them, the 2 Pro is the biggest jump compared to the standing model in terms of height and the first generation, although they didn’t forget to mention minor manufacturing flaws either.
